COPD and the Healthcare Team

What other health care professionals would be involved with the care of a client with alterations related to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and what are their roles?   The goal of COPD management is to improve the patient’s quality of life by preserving lung function, improving symptoms and reducing exacerbations ( Mosenifar , 2017) . It is also mentioned in some of my readings that the care of a client with COPD focuses on Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Pulmonary rehabilitation involves a multidisciplinary team approach that includes assessment, exercise training, nutrition counseling, smoking cessation, and education for the patient. Patients with COPD at all disease stages benefit from pulmonary rehabilitation programs lasting at least 6 weeks; the longer the program, the better the results. Successful implementation of a pulmonary rehabilitation program usually requires a team approach, with individual components provided by healthcare professionals...

Staff Acceptance and Implementation of Change

“Change is inevitable” that is how most people say it. This is very true for most leaders, as it is their responsibility, or their main task, to implement changes in their organizations, system adjustments that are necessary to achieve company goals, even if it becomes very unpopular among the members of the team. This cynicism towards change is most often the barrier that managers face when they implement a new process or system. We have all heard many managers complain about the difficulties they have encountered in implementing modification in the workplace. They say that their team members, continually resists and strongly opposes the changes that they would want to happen. In an article I stumbled online, one author explored this perception, and contests that this “people resist change”-attitude is a false belief of leaders and managers, and that this cynicism and self-doubt can be pushed aside to bring forth the changes that leaders want in their organizations. The art...

Are you Number 12?

World Hepatitis Day 2012 Coverage Our hospital held the 2012 World Hepatitis Day on July 28, and I was able to get the first-hand feel of the celebration, as the activity coordinator for the event.  I was determined to get the message across, not only that this was in accordance to a memorandum received in my office, prompting our  facility to celebrate all World Health Organization (WHO) Days, but because I have been acquainted with this virus as it has infected some people I know. True to its 2012 theme: “It’s closer than you think,” hepatitis does not just affect 1 in 12 people worldwide, it affects those close to them too. Families and friends of hepatitis positive victims are most of the time caught in the middle of the crisis. The unavailability of information and support groups, and the threat of discrimination, definitely adds to the burden of those involved. I can just imagine how powerful this  campaign will be to increase the awareness to...

Reflections on Religion and Cultural Competence

Nurses must be able to identify their religious affiliations and how it affects their clinical judgement, attitude, and behaviors towards their peers and their clients. It is proven that religion is powerful and influential in creating our individual culture, as it molds our moral code, which greatly affects our thinking and perception in our day to day living. Understanding how our personal culture is molded by our spiritual and religious beliefs is critical in being able too effectively deliver healthcare services to our clients, and create a conducive work environment for workers. According to UNESCO, religion is a major influence in the world today. They added that people in all cultures have a set of beliefs that go beyond both the self and the natural world. We use these beliefs to help explain reasons for human existence and to guide personal relationships and behaviour. They further said that, religion have a strong influence on the culture of a community. This is true t...

Should Canada Privatized its Healthcare System?

I do not think that Canada will benefit from privatization of the healthcare system. The Canadian Healthcare System is rooted on the Canada Health Act and its 5 principles: Universality, Portability, Comprehensibility, Public Administration, and Accessibility. And the one key feature that is emphasized is that healthcare is a social service that should be available to all. Its objective is to deliver universal coverage for medically necessary health care services provided on the basis of need, rather than the ability to pay. The debate on privatization of healthcare, or a mix of both/ two-tier healthcare system- partially public and partially private, is a hot topic. Pro-privatization movements points out the exhausting waiting time for surgeries in the Canadian Healthcare. They as well has a strong stance that a two-tier system will improve the quality of healthcare services, and that the current Medicare is not sustainable. I understand that Canada already lived in a period wh...

In Focus: Patient Safety

Patient Safety is integral in all healthcare institutions. It is important that this is inculcated in the values of the organization, and instilled individually among its employees, since healthcare will not live up to its optimum function if this dimension of care is nonexistent in the organization. The Joint Commission (JC) periodically releases a prioritized list of goals directed to patient safety. Initially released in 2003, the National Patient Safety Goals were established to provide a guide for accredited hospitals, for them to be properly instructed what activities and objectives are of primary concern with regards to securing safety of patients. With the help of the Patient Safety Advisory Group, which includes different professionals from various specializations, the organization continuously identifies the most common incidents that put hospital clients at risk. The group conduct evaluations of hospitals, gather data from these health institutions, and analyze these number...
